Cultural events and attractions take center stage this fall. The 14th annual Austin Film Festival runs Oct. 11-18 and features more than 100 screenings, alongside workshops and panel discussions with such industry legends and executives as director Oliver Stone, writer Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, Munich) and Thomas Schlamme (West Wing.) Day badges are still available for $95 and allow VIP line access to all film screenings and a pass to Saturday's conference panels.

The newly opened Mexican-American Cultural Center celebrates Latino and Native-American heritage. "Emerging Chaos" is the inaugural exhibit showcasing works by up-and-coming Latino artists, and families can enjoy La Pastorela: A Shepherd's Story, a Latino holiday performance, Nov. 25- Dec. 11.

Local museums offer free admission and special events, Sept. 23, for Austin Museum Day. Kids delight in a Dr. Seuss reading at the LBJ Library and Museum or experiencing the rumble of an oil gusher at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Austin Museum of Art invites guests to participate in their current exhibit, Extra-Ordinary: the Everyday Object in American Art, with hands-on activities that transform household objects into art.

Pianist Philipe Entremont kicks off the Austin Symphony season with a classical performance of works by Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn and more. Ballet Austin's seasons starts, Sept. 27-30, with an imaginative rendition of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The curtain rises on Austin Lyric Opera's Simply the Best: Opera's Greatest Hits, Nov. 2-4.

Lamberts Shakes Up Austin

Stop by Lamberts Downtown Barbecue in the 2nd Street District to sample The Batini, the newly-crowned "official drink of Austin." Lamberts signature drink serves as an homage to two local classics—the Congress Avenue bats and Tito's Handmade Vodka. Turn this perfect pairing into a trio by combining it with Austin's third signature attraction: live music. Lamberts presents shows by local jazz, gypsy and tango bands during happy hour.

Halloween on Sixth Street: Dress Up and Party Down

Witches, no need to bring a broom. Everything you need to celebrate Halloween in Austin is within walking distance of the Capital City's "haunted headquarters"—East Sixth Street. Kick off a spooky holiday at the historic Driskill Hotel, where rumors persist that the original owner, Jesse Driskill, still roams the halls. Sign up for an Austin Ghost Tour to experience other worldly encounters in the pubs and clubs that line the famed entertainment district. Then join 60,000 other costumed revelers to raise your holiday spirits while roaming Sixth Street on Halloween night.

A New Chapter for the Texas Book Festival

The Texas Book Festival returns to the Texas Capitol, Nov. 3-4, with such renowned writers as Tom Perotta, author of The Abstinence Teacher and Little Children, and Kristin Gore, daughter of former Vice President Al Gore. Festival-goers can also browse among exhibitor booths, take in live music performances and attend book signings. Register to win a VIP trip to the festival and find additional information including featured authors and events at www.texasbookfestival.org

Top Picks: Red River District
If indie, punk or alternative rock is your style, Red River is your district. Stubb's BBQ presents such big-name acts as Sonic Youth (Oct. 5), Lyle Lovett (Oct. 15) and Regina Spektor (Nov. 6). At Emo's, Austin's legendary alternative music venue, check out gypsy-punk rockers Gogol Bordello on Oct. 22 or hip-hop wordsmith Aesop Rock on Nov. 17.

Each Sunday morning, wake up to Stubb's weekly Gospel Brunch for a dose of spiritual music, Southern cooking and Austin's signature "build-your-own-Bloody-Mary" bar. Every Monday night, pick up the microphone for Rock 'n' Roll Karaoke at Beerland, which also features UK rockers The Foxes, Oct. 9, and quirky dance-pop band Cat Scientist, Oct. 26.
